Brrrr, yes that is snow from last night in the mountains just north of us. We’re near Zion National Park. Camping at Sand Hollow, a state park near Saint George Utah. Saint George is just north of the Utah/Arizona border and March may be a little early to visit. It is surrounded by mountains and every mountain has a distinct snow line. We are camping at Sand Hollow and there are several Utah State and National Parks in the area. The location also has access to some outstanding day trips and makes for a wonderful stay. We will most definitely be back.

Red Cliffs
One of our favorite places in Saint George is called Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and they have a campground, but we didn’t stay there. While there we hiked up the river to a slot canyon and only stopped because we hit a waterfall. Red Cliffs, like Joshua Tree and Valley of Fire, is another photographer’s dream.

Two problems stopped us from camping there, number one, unless there is a different route that we don’t know about and there may be one starting in Silver Reef, a mining town to the northeast — we could never fit under the bridge, leading to the campground. Secondly, we are too big for most every campsite we saw, although there was a big fifth wheel in one of the sites. Since camping, there was also first-come-first-serve, and only one spot would be suitable, I don’t know how we would be able to get that spot.

Zion National Park
We also visited both the north side and the south side of Zion National Park. Most people don’t know about the north side. After visiting Zion, we drove again for many more miles (way too many) to Bryce Canyon National Park. Zion was crowded, as it always is, and Bryce Canyon had of snow that made the pictures all that more interesting. Both places are stunning.

Bryce Canyon National Park
We are already planning on our next visit to the Saint George Area and it is a timing issue. Cedar Breaks National Park is close; it is too snowy this time of year. I really want to go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is still closed in March, for the winter. The North Rim doesn’t open until May 15, which is probably too hot in Saint George but would be great in Cedar Breaks. The North Rim Closes on October 15 for the winter, probably the best route would be from north to south in the fall, stopping Cedar Breaks and then catching the North Rim, right before it closes for the season. Not in the plan for now. Perhaps we can do that in a few years. Maybe I will remember to look at my own recommendations.

As we leave here, we will be going east, trying to stay in the desert until weather approves and then move north through Utah collecting more Utah National Parks on the way.
