Campsite Review: Chiriaco Summit Campground is located north of Interstate 10 halfway between Palm Springs and the Arizona border.
To get there take Interstate 10 east or west to Summit Road and turn north. As you are traveling north turn east on Chiriaco Road and you will observe the General Patton Museum parking lot on the north side of the road. Turn north on the unnamed road, next to the parking lot. After you pass the tanks (yes real army tanks), take the next turn to the west, and this is the RV park.
This is an inexpensive (free) place to stop as you cross the Mojave Desert. Chiriaco Summit is the location of the General Patton Museum.

Observations
Campsite Review: Chiriaco Summit Campground insider info:
Chiriaco Summit is not like any typical RV park. There is a host, but I think all he does is write down license plate numbers. The campground is the result of using a bulldozer to dig out and flatten some desert along an old trail. At the end of the campground is a turnaround. The slope of the campground is toward the south. The spots furthest west, are the flattest.
There is also overnight parking at the truck stop on Chiriaco Road just to the east — this RV park is better than that, unless the rare rainstorm happens, then the opposite would be true.
