Campsite Review: LL Stub Stewart Campground is 34 miles west of Portland on State Route 47 between Buxton and Vernonia. We love it. The campground is just to the east of the highway, carved into the dense forest. It is very private and secluded, but still close enough to small towns to make it very comfortable.
There are 78 full hookup RV campsites at LL Stubb Stewart.
The loops at Stub Stewart are named Dairy Creek East and West. There is also a pack-in tent area, a horse camp, and a cabin area.
Each area in LL Stub Stewart is so separate that if you didn’t know about the other areas, you probably would not even know that they were there.
Here is our blog post about our multiple stays in northwest Oregon: Northwest Oregon, Scappoose Bay & Vernonia
LL Stub Stewart is a very nice campground.

Observations
Campsite Review: LL Stub Stewart Campground insider info:
The one item this campground lacks is a lake. Everything other than the missing lake is super nice. It would be our favorite place we have ever found — if it had a lake.
Every RV site has ample room for any size RV. Nearly all have almost zero slope to the parking area. This feature sadly does not describe all Oregon State parks. All the sites at LL Stub Stewart are back-in except for two pull-throughs.
The west loop is for RVs and the northwest section is dedicated to drive-up tent camping. The east loop is only for RVs. Another difference between the loops is that the west loop has an island of trees in the middle.
South of the visitors center is an area for pack-in or bike in tent camping this area is close to the rails to trails converted bike path. (more on this later)
There is also a dedicated and separate area for cabins and much further to the north is a dedicated area for horse/RV camping including an area for day use horse trailer parking.
We like Dairy Creek West better than Dairy Creek East. The tree island adds a more forested feel. Families may be more comfortable in Dairy Creek East because at the north end of the loop there is a playground.
We stayed in site 52 two times and liked it more than the north end of Dairy Creek West. The south part of this loop was very quiet and very dark at night.
Bonus
LL Stub Stewart is at the middle point of the Banks to Vernonia State Trail. This is a train route converted into a hiking and bicycle trail. It is almost at the high point of the trail. From just north of Stub Stewart, the trail descends in each direction. We parked at the Manning trailhead and rode our bikes to our RV for lunch and then coasted the seven miles back to the place we parked our car.
Stub Stewart has 30 miles of trails carved into the forest in the park accessible by foot, bike, or horse.
There are two separate disc golf courses in the park. One beginner course and one 18 hole course.
