Painting of St. Francis Xavier at Church of the Gesu In Rome.

Beautiful art at the Church of the Gesù in Rome.

After arriving in Rome, we didn’t want to go to sleep, hoping to get over Jet Lag as soon as possible. So, one of the first things we did was go to the Church of the Gesu. The theory says that if you stay awake until the usual bedtime of the local people, it will help you get over jet lag. We were dead tired. Who thinks up these theories anyway? The results of a government-funded academic study. In our case, the theory didn’t match reality. It didn’t work.

Photoblog, Rome, Italy, Europe. April 1, 2025

What are we doing in Europe? Here is the story. Touring Europe might be a crazy idea.

The Church of the Gesù is the mother church of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a Catholic religious order. The Jesuits sent missionary teachers to every location in the world. They missed Antarctica and Australia because they had yet to be discovered by Western culture when they were doing this. Construction of the church began on 26 June 1568.

To keep us awake, we took a free walking tour of the city. The Church of the Gesù was the first stop at Piazza del Gesù in Rome on our walking tour. We were so tired that we broke away from the group and couldn’t go the whole distance. Still, we saw many of the significant sites, and I will include photos taken on the walking tour later, grouped with the main article about that location.

About our photos

These photos were taken during our visit. Our photos are often “enhanced” to represent what we saw in person and correct for lighting and other things. Sometimes, this editing makes the images look better than what we saw in person.
