The Beautiful Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain should be on every visitor’s list of must-see attractions in Rome. The fountain is one of the earliest water sources for ancient Rome. The ornate fountain was built to celebrate the finishing of a major aqueduct that brought much-needed water to the city.

Today’s fountain was made in 1762 from travertine stone mined locally in Rome. The fountain was located near a vital spring used before Rome was named at least in 400 B.C.

A famous aqueduct was completed in 19 A.D., ending at the fountain’s location. Remodeling over the next 1700 years resulted in the monument we see today.

Aqueduct-fed exceptionally ornamental fountain, designed by Nicola Salvi & completed in 1762, with sculpted figures.

The movie “Three Coins in the Fountain” established the tradition of tossing spare change into the Trevi Fountain. The coins in the fountain are cleaned out every week and given directly to charity.
