Campsite Lathrop State Park just west of Walsenburg Colorado

Crossing into Colorado

We had a good stay in New Mexico, crossing into Colorado on June 2nd. we crossed into Colorado and stayed at Lathrop State Park is between Trinidad and Pueblo. Hopefully, we will get close enough to see our stationery and mobile friends soon. I send these updates out so if we get close enough, we can get together as we travel. So far it has worked out quite a few times.

While at our last stop east of Raton New Mexico, Sugarite Canyon State Park, we crossed into Colorado on a back road which was the route suggested by our RV GPS as the easiest way to Sugarite. What the RV GPS didn’t mention was that there wasn’t a road and that route would have taken us across a pasture. Good thing I called the campground for some last-minute instructions on the route from Raton to Sugarite.

Raton pass is the closest feature at the border of Colorado and New Mexico when you are crossing into Colorado it is the high point, just north of the town of Raton on Interstate 25. Our first stop was at Lathrop State Park just west of Walsenburg Colorado.   We expect to get to Colorado Springs next week. Some friends just told us that the Air Force Academy campground is the nicest place they have ever stayed. I’m looking forward to it. It is going to be hard to beat the view of West Spanish Peak from our current spot.

We spent three months in New Mexico before we crossed into Colorado and will be heading north until we get to Minot North Dakota in the middle of August. Then we turn west.

Here is a link to the google map for the area.

  1. to John

Snow still about 8000 ft. Valleys are lush green. Will investigate further west and report back.

  2. Thanks for the update. Currently, we’re planning on being in Salida, CO the first week of July. We want to get to CO earlier, but I’m not sure when with how the weather has been.

I hope we can link up while were there.

  3. Oh failed to mention, zero cell at Sugarite. And Dinosaur is hot in the summer. Haven’t been there for years.

  4. Make sure you go thru Theodore Roosevelt National Park in ND. One of the best little National Parks for wildlife viewing.

  5. Air Force Academy campground is a strange arrangement of sites from what I remember but the best are Fiddlers of course and Whidbey Island in WA and Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville FL The worst are Annapolis and Langley. Langley Air Fore Base in VA is a definite – never stay there – it doesn’t even resemble a campground!

    Have a great trip!

  6. This is fantastic!! We are so happy you are out exploring and finding so many wonderful places to stay.

We wish you all the best and safe travels, Trish
