We spent the week near Roswell, at Bottomless Lakes State Park, and are now moving west back towards White Sands Missile Range.
Bottomless Lakes was named because even after tying several ropes together, the cowboys at the time were never able to measure the depth. The lakes we’re caused by several caverns that roof caved in and fell exposing the caves to the sky. These caverns were and still are full of water along the Pecos River and connected by underground passageways.
The cave structure here was all limestone and leftover from times that this entire area was in the ocean. Eventually, the roofs of the caves collapsed exposing the caves to open sky, which subsequently flooded with water.
Lea lake (in the picture) is saltwater, but others are fresh. The mineral content is also extremely high. The WPA built the structures hoping to create a desert spa — (and give people jobs.)
Here is a link to the google map for the area.
